Every college graduate knows the struggle of getting that first real job. Everybody wants to hire someone with previous experience, and how are you supposed to have it if you are right out of college? Well, some students decide to go for “summer internships”, and let us tell you, it is a truly great way to get some experience while still studying.

However, you should always plan ahead. It is not as complicated as writing a dissertation, of course, but a certain degree of organization and preparation is still required.

First things first – find those internships that you are truly interested in. How can you achieve that? Well, nearly every college in the country has some sort of a career center that is responsible for exactly these kinds of things. So do not be lazy and head over there. Of course, you should also do a rather extensive search online. Try to communicate with people who have already attended those internships that you are interested in and ask them as many questions about it as possible.

While you are at it, don’t forget to write everything down. This is just to ensure you don’t forget or miss anything. Create some sort of a table that will contain all the information you find important about all the internships you are interested in.

Now that you have chosen internships you find useful, it is time to start preparing applications. This usually means that you will be writing a personal statement, a CV, cover letters, etc. Be sure to have everything you need to apply for a certain internship beforehand.

Now it’s time to apply! Usually, this time comes right around February. Apply for all the internships you were interested in and wait for their response. By the way, if you have any problems writing such things as a personal statement, just get some personal statement help online. While you are waiting, you should also think of things such as where you are going to live while doing this internship. As a matter of fact, you probably will apply for one or two internships that are located quite away from your home. So try to take care of that in advance.

Now the results are in and, hopefully, you get to choose between all the internships that you qualify for! Choose the one that you think is going to be of the biggest use for you. When you have made your choice, it’s time to get yourself ready. Make sure you have everything you need before you leave for an internship. After that – have a wonderful time getting practical knowledge and skills that you will further apply in your real, paid-for job.
